The Owenkillew offers grades 2 and 3 white-water on the stretch from Gortin to Newtownstewart. There is a particularly exciting rapid in the gorge section just down-river of the confluence with the River Glenelly. this gorge section can be inspected from the rocks on river-left when the water level is low but must be inspected from the top of the gorge on river-right when the water level is high. Access to the top of the gorge is from the bank just past the meeting with the Glenelly - do not miss this break-out at high water levels! If the water level in the Glenelly is high it is advisable to paddle close to the right bank of the Owenkillew as you approach the confluence

A recently constructed weir below the gorge section must be portaged at all water levels. This weir has a long tow-back and no break-out below it and is, therefore, extremely dangerous for canoeists or swimmers. There are warning signs on both banks above the weir and the easiest portage is on the right bank.

Alas, I have only one photograph of the Owenkillew, at present, but I'm working on it!
